Official Opening of the Rotary Centennial Playground May 3, 2008
The Rotary Centennial Playground, a playground for children of all abilities, was officially opened by Max Keeping on Saturday May 3, 2008. Also in attendance were His Worship Mayor Larry O'Brien and local Councillors Clive Doucet and Shad Qadri, as well as many local Rotarians, representatives of major donors and sponsors, representatives of the local community association and of course families and children who will use the playground.
The opening ceremonies concluded with three children, Jennie Jeffery, Ryker Jeffery and Declan McCoy, unveiling the donor wall and statue. The sculpture done by well-known artist Bruce Garner was donated by local Rotarian Ted Ferrier and his wife, Lois. The statue depicts two children at play, one with a disability.
Immediately following the official opening, Rotarians and guests adjourned to St. Elias Centre where a Playground Gala celebrated the culmination of three years of construction completing the first phase and kicked off fundraising efforts for the retrofit of the water play feature.
